Discounts no longer working? Here’s what really drives buying today

What is a brand voice (and what it isn’t)?

Promotions, limited-time offers, flashing discounts — these are the kinds of offers that used to guarantee sales, but today they’re starting to lose their power. Consumers, who have become less swayed by numbers, are looking for a more meaningful reason to buy a particular product or service. For today’s buyer, the idea, the emotion, the feeling, and of course the experience matter far more than the thing itself.

What do recent studies actually show?

According to research, as many as 71% of consumers say they are more likely to buy from a brand they feel an emotional connection with. That means people are no longer just hunting for the cheapest offer — they choose what resonates with their values or lifestyle. On top of that, authentic, human content drives 2.4 times more trust than ordinary advertising or discount campaigns. Consumers are willing to pay more if they believe in the value of the product or identify with the brand’s story. In other words, today people aren’t just buying what you offer them — they’re buying why you do it.

Why don’t discounts work anymore?

Although promotions have long been one of the main engines of sales, today they’re losing their effect more and more. Consumer behavior is changing — buyers are becoming more conscious and informed. A reduced price alone often no longer triggers action, because it doesn’t match what the modern buyer is looking for. Here are a few of the main reasons traditional discounts increasingly go unnoticed.

  • Overuse. When promotions become the norm rather than the exception, they lose their power. Consumers have already gotten used to constant “special offers,” so they’re no longer interesting — on the contrary, they often raise doubts about the real value of the product. Excessive use of discounts erodes trust and, over time, weakens the brand’s market position.
  • Urgency and pressure. Phrases like “today only” or “last chance” used to actually drive action — they triggered the fear of missing out. But now these tactics are used so often that consumers have simply become immune to them. They understand that “last chance” usually isn’t the last one, and that “limited time” often has no real deadline.
  • Lack of personalization. A discount doesn’t tell a story, doesn’t answer the question “why do I need this,” and doesn’t create emotion. Today, when the buying process moves into social media and is driven by content that works through trust, simply lowering the price loses its meaning. If a person doesn’t see how the product will solve their problem or improve their daily life, even a big promotion won’t catch their attention.

What really drives buying?

Today’s consumers are more informed, more demanding, and more emotional — they don’t just want to buy, they want to feel what makes the choice meaningful. So brands that want to capture an audience need to focus on engaging content that creates value.

straipsnis 346 1
  • Authentic content. Modern consumers easily spot staged advertising and tend to trust real experiences far more. Authenticity creates closeness — when a person feels that a brand is speaking sincerely, the customer makes a buying decision much faster.
  • Educational content. Consumers no longer want to be persuaded — they want to be informed. When a brand helps them better understand a problem or provides knowledge that helps them make a decision, it becomes an authority — not just a seller. This can take the form of useful tips or in-depth guides.
  • Community. People want to belong to a community, to be heard, to be included, to have the chance to share their experience. Brands that know how to not just talk but also listen — win. This can take the form of Q&A series or customer story campaigns.
