Brand voice on social media. Would you still be recognizable without your logo?
What is a brand voice (and what it isn’t)?
A brand voice is the “personality” of your communication: the vocabulary, tone, rhythm, attitude, sense of humor, structures, emotion — even sentence length. The voice shows up everywhere: when you explain something complex, when you sell, when you respond to criticism, when you greet, when you call to action.
Important: a brand voice isn’t just a “polite” or “friendly” tone, a nice font, or pretty visuals. And it isn’t generic phrases (e.g. “Your smile is our priority”) that anyone could say.
Why does brand voice matter so much?
Attention on social media is scarce, but information is overwhelming. So the winners are the brands whose communication is:
- instantly recognizable (even without visuals — and sometimes without text);
- capable of triggering an emotion or providing clarity;
- builds trust;
- has its own “angle” — a clear point of view and style.
A strong voice helps you stand out, but it also delivers in practice: it often improves organic reach, reduces the need for excessive paid ads, and over time helps raise perceived value (and sometimes price).

What do the strongest brands actually do?
Major brands are increasingly choosing to deliberately hide their logo, knowing that the audience will recognize them through other identity elements (shapes, colors, fonts, phrases, compositions).
1. Heinz – “It has to be…” (2025)
In Heinz’s 2025 campaign “It has to be…” the logo is essentially absent — instead, only the recognizable brand frame remains, and the message relies on a single simple phrase (“It has to be…”) combined with classic pairings (fries + ketchup, beans + toast, and others).
Before the campaign launched, tests showed that more than 70% of people recognized the brand even without the logo.
2. Coca-Cola – “Shadows” (2025)
3. Doritos – “Anti-Ad” (2019)
Doritos once took it even further: in their campaign they removed the logo and even stopped mentioning the name on social channels, focusing only on the triangle shape and user-generated content (UGC) created by their community.
This is the ultimate level of confidence: when you’re recognizable enough, you can let your audience “fill in” the brand for you.
5 signs your brand voice hasn’t taken shape yet
1. Your posts could just as easily have been written by any of your competitors.
2. One day you sound very formal, the next you’re full of emojis and slang.
3. Different members of the team write in completely different ways.
4. The tone in comments/messages is dramatically different from the tone of your posts.
5. Your communication has no “anchors”: no recurring phrases, structures, or expressions people would recognize.
Does this sound like you? That’s a clear signal that your brand voice hasn’t fully taken shape yet.
Where do even the best brands get stuck?
The most common problem isn’t creativity — it’s consistency. The voice lives in someone’s head but it’s never clearly defined, so:
- one day the team “nails it”, the next they slip into generic phrases;
- posts sound one way, while messages/comments sound another;
- everything looks polished and tidy — but it isn’t… you.
